Opening hours - 8.30 am - 3.00 pm Monday to Friday
Reading is a priority at Hilder Road State School. We encourage students
to read quality literature daily and borrow from our Cybrary on a regular
basis. The Cybrary is open every day before school at 8:30am and every lunch
time (1.20 pm - 1.45 pm) for students to borrow books and access computers for
educational games, research and assignments. We are not open during wet lunch
times.
The name, 'Mountfield' Community Cybrary links the local area history
with the 21st Century use of computers and technology. The name 'Mountfield' is
the title of the original dairy farm property which became our school grounds
in 1979. The school community uses the Cybrary for various meetings, school
functions and lessons.
The word 'Cybrary' comes from the name adopted by the University of
Queensland Library to 'describe its integration of cyberspace and physical
space'. The name recognizes the need for combining print and electronic
information sources.
Our Cybrary is a bright, colourful and welcoming environment for our
students, staff, parents and school community to use and enjoy. The well-resourced
Cybrary is air-conditioned with 11 computers and comfortable, custom-built
furniture. Our adjoining space is the Marino Room which has an additional 31
laptops for whole class access to computers. Teachers use the screens and data
projectors for demonstrations, modelling and various learning activities. We
have 50 iPads and a set of iPods for teachers to borrow for their classrooms.
Our students enjoy reading
and relaxing in our armchairs, playing games, doing research or assignments and
accessing computers for learning purposes. The spacious and purpose-built
building is conveniently located on ground level and in the centre of the
school. Our refurbished courtyard is adjacent to the Federation Garden.
Readers Cup
Hilder Road State School will be
hosting the Brisbane Central Readers Cup competition again this year in our
school hall on Wednesday, 6th June. Last year 26 schools competed in
the Readers Cup competition. Readers Cup is organised by the Queensland Branch
of the Children's Book Council of Australia. It is a state wide competition for
young readers. Teams of four students together read a set of 5 books, and then
compete with other schools to answer quiz questions from the books. The
competition was introduced in 2004 to celebrate 50 years of CBCA in Queensland.
It caters for Years 5/6 students in primary schools.
Readers
Cup competitions challenge students to read widely, work collaboratively in a
team and continue developing a love of reading. It allows readers to compete at
a regional and state level similar to sporting competitions and to meet other
students with an equal passion for books. See the website for further
information. https://readerscup.org.au/
Book Club
Our wonderful Teacher Aides conduct our Scholastic
Book Club twice each term. Brochures are sent home with the students. Our
school earns 20% of the total sales as rewards points to spend on Scholastic
resources for our Cybrary and classrooms. Book Club generates approximately an
additional $2,000 worth of valuable resources for our school. The preferred
method of payment is by LOOP but if you are paying by cash please enclose the
correct money in an envelope. Cheques should be made payable to Scholastic
Australia. See the website www.scholastic.com.au/LOOP
